STATEMENT OF GOODWILL, PEACE AND FAIR PARTICIPATION TO ALL MALAWIANS IN THE FRESH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The NGO–Gender Coordination Network (NGO–GCN) wishes to extend its goodwill and peace to all Malawians – in particular registered voters – as you prepare to vote for a candidate of your choice in the coming fresh presidential election (FPE) set for 23rd June, 2020.
We call upon all Malawians and all key electoral players to exercise due diligence to the electoral code of conduct in ensuring that the FPE are peaceful, free, fair and credible. More importantly, we wish to recommend for the respect of global and national policy aspirations on the equal participation of men and women in politics; such that the safety, dignity and respect of all female and male voters, news media practitioners, electoral workers, CSO representatives, security service personnel and party monitors remains equally uncompromised throughout the electoral process.
Further, despite our superficial differences, let us all maintain oneness by realising that the election is not an end in itself, but rather a mere means of attaining the development we all equally aspire for and deserve. It is, therefore, not worth risking our own peace and safety, as well as that of our own fellow Malawians through inciting or perpetrating any acts of violence.
Lastly, NGO-GCN wishes to commend the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) for demonstrating preparedness, openness, transparency and diligence in the face of short and tight schedule within which to deliver a credible election. We applaud and wish to encourage MEC to continue working closely with all the respective political parties, civil society organisations, the media and the general public among others, as such is pivotal in contributing towards the credibility of the elections themselves.
